VSPR

This module will present an introduction to NTS and provide the knowledge needed to begin to competently apply these skills in the workplace.

  1. Define NTS and
  2. What is the history of NTS
  3. explore their role in healthcare and medical error
  4. Identify each NTS and the behavioural components

This module will enable you to develop an awareness of the different teams that function in healthcare environments. You will explore the factors that are a part of an effective team as well as the barriers present in the clinical setting to effective teamwork. Lastly strategies will be identified that will enable you to participate in and be a productive member of healthcare teams.

This module will enable you to appreciate the role of effective communication in healthcare and in healthcare teams and identify the barriers and enablers to effective communication. It will also introduce you to a range of communication strategies that can be used in the clinical setting with an opportunity to apply these skills in scenarios in a simulated patient care encounter.

Situation awareness is an everyday occurrence as well as having relevance for high risk industries such as healthcare to maintain patient safety. In this module we will review the definition of situational awareness and examine how it is applied to situations in healthcare. The elements of situational awareness and of clinical situations will be reviewed and the opportunities will be presented to enhance situational awareness skills.

Decisions in healthcare have become very complex. With such complex and uncertain environments it can be difficult to comprehend all possible solutions let alone compare each solution and make a decision.  This module will introduce the concept of making a decision as an individual and as part of team and explore the factors that can impact decision making. The module will present tools and strategies to enhance decision making for health professionals.

Numerous factors contribute to high stress and fatigue levels in health professionals which can have detrimental impact on performance. In this module you will explore the different types of stress experienced by health professional and various approaches to manage stress. Additionally the sources of fatigue will be identified and the potential impact of fatigue on performance will be investigated. Strategies to manage fatigue will also be introduced.

Task management is associated with planning and preparing, prioritising, providing and maintaining standards, and identifying and utilizing resources. In this module you will explore the impact of the correct scheduling of tasks and activities according to importance and being able to allocate attention accordingly. You will also investigate the importance of supporting safety and quality by adhering to standards and protocols and look at identifying the essential and available requirements for completion of a task and how to use those resources to complete the task with minimum stress or workload.

The following learning through simulation scenarios are presented to enable learners to apply the knowledge and skills obtained in the modules to realistic clinical situations. The presentation of the scenarios in a virtual environment facilitates exploration of potential consequences of failures in NTS in a safe learning environment. There are five learning through simulation scenarios that are presented for leaners to explore.
